A hospital trust in the north-west of England approached us to help them elevate their L2 psychology training offer for cancer support workers (an emerging and exciting role within cancer care.) There was a real worry that key foundational knowledge would be forgotten once face-to-face training had happened, and participants would have to trawl through numerous Powerpoint slides to find the information that they needed. The current offer was a 90+ page word document that participants printed out and worked through by hand.
We designed a digital workbook that participants could access and refer to once they were putting the training into practice. The content was already hitting many markers of good learning design with lots of opportunities for realistic practice, detailed feedback, reflection, and spaced practice, however we found a great opportunity to introduce audio, animation and interactive modelling to place the foundational content in realistic practice.
The workbook was designed to fit any screen and had a neat search function. We also created pre and post course materials to help break information down into manageable chunks and negate cognitive overload.
We brought expert insights to life through video and interactive graphics to model fundamental theories and processes, which learners could work through at their own pace. This meant students saw how to do something while thinking about how to do it. We also made it easier for students to understand the patient experience by using meaningful stories to drive intrinsic motivation.
