Arriving in the UK to study is a very busy, exciting time, but with so much new and important information to take on board, it can be overwhelming. A north-west university asked us to help them provide targeted support to their post-graduate international students before they arrived to help prepare them for student life.
Drawing on past and present students’ lived experiences and expert knowledge, we created two activity-rich short courses to help develop students’ understanding of social and cultural transition and academic integrity.
We used a problem-first approach when designing the activities, inviting students to think about what they would do if they faced a similar problem. We also provided targeted and concise feedback in audio format. Students were given opportunities to practice for various situations, such as navigating passport control to paraphrasing and referencing. Each short course could be completed in under an hour.
Experts at the university were able to directly connect with their prospective students in advance of their arrival. Students arrived prepared for unfamiliar concepts and were able to orientate themselves with confidence.
The academic integrity element of the resource addressed any misconceptions and resulted in reducing academic misconduct cases by 30%.
